SIERRA LEONE : Death of 14-year-old raped girl sparks street protest

Over seven hundred women and school girls in Sierra Leone’s eastern district of Kono are grieving over an increase in sexual and gender base violence in their district. Women dressed in black, marched through the town with placards condemning rape and sexual aggression against women. Their streets protest in the town of Koidu followed the death of a14-year-old female student, who was allegedly raped to death by a man, age 56. WADR’s Freetown Reporter Mohamed Massaquoi has the rest of the story.

INIGER : ISS Researcher on whether ex prexy Tandja’s presence poses security threat

Ever since Niger’s former President Mamadou Tandja was ousted in a bloody military coup, the new junta leaders have been trying to find a foreign country to host him. Tandja was overthrown, amidst a groundswell of opposition against his move to dissolve parliament, the constitutional court and the country’s constitution and hold a referendum which was widely condemned. Besides, the ousted Nigerien President, whose second and final term ended on December 22nd, had extended his stay in power by three more years. Now ex-President Tandja is still being held in the custody of the soldiers. But what are the security implications for his continuous presence in the country? And what lessons should be learned from Niger’s coup regarding bad governance?

IVORY COAST : 95% of election preparations completed, as INEC new officials take office

It is done. The new president of the Ivorian Independent Electoral Commission and his team have now taken over and started their duties. The IEC Chairman Youssouf Bakaoyo took over from the sacked IEC Chairman Robert Beugre Mambe over the weekend. Enoh Ndri is WADR’s Abidjan Correspondent, who attended the ceremony.
