The Former President of Cape Verde, António Manuel Gomes Monteiro has committed to serve as special envoy for the West African Work Group, an umbrella organization of groups fighting against malnutrition in the sub-region.

Cape Verde is a small Island nation off the West African coast in the Atlantic Ocean.

In a press release, the group said the former Cape Verde leader will be in charge of advocacy.

Monteiro's mission is to encourage other West African leaders to include nutrition in their development strategies and also to advise them on the best approaches to strengthen policies.

More than a million children under 5 years die of malnutrition in West Africa annually.

Ex-President Monteiro, who ruled Cabo Verde from March 1991 to March 2001, says he feels honored to have been chosen to fight malnutrition.
