Senegal: Save Hann Bay from Pollution
Efforts are underway to clean up one of the most polluted areas of Senegal – Hann Bay.
The bay surrounds the industrial zone of the capital Dakar and it is located in a highly populated area, with local residents bathing in the water, and numerous fishing boats along the crowded shore.
Heavy metals, chemicals, tannery waste, sewage, solid waste are some of the pollutants of Hann Bay, according to researchers.
Industrial pollution along the banks since 1968 has rendered the bay exceedingly toxic, thus posing serious risk to health and the environment.
A group of local and international organizations held a meeting Friday in Dakar to discuss a project due to start shortly intended to reduce the pollution of Hann Bay.
The French Development Agency, AFD, is one of the international organizations partaking in efforts to reduce pollution at the bay.
Reporter Cheikh Tidiane Dioum spoke with an official of AFD, Jean Christophe Pecresse.
