Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health and Sanitation has taken doctors and nurses at public hospitals by surprise by conducting mid-night inspection of conditions at the facilities.

The visits by Minister Mrs. Zainab Bangura were prompted by information reaching health authorities that many doctors and nurses were abandoning work at night.

It has not really been established why some of the medical staff are fond of abandoning their posts especially at night.

Most hospitals are left with only few nurses at night, a situation the Health Ministry says is now getting out of hand, especially at the maternity wards in hospital.

As WADR’s Freetown Correspondent reports, the Health Minister’s inspection exercise which started two days ago, is due to be extended to hospitals outside the capital.
