UNOCI on plight of people in northern Ivory Coast

While the international community focuses on Western Ivory Coast marred by a spate of recent violence, the UN Mission (UNOCI) has urged development partners to also look at what is happening in the North of country, faced with severe challenges as well.

The North used to be headquarters of the New Forces rebels who is backing current President Alassane Ouattara.

Bert Koenders, head of UNOCI said the most vulnerable and deprived families are hunger stricken and schools in northern Ivory Coast needed educational materials.

Speaking to Journalists in the commercial capital, Abidjan after returning from a visit to the region, the UN envoy also said hospitals need logistical support especially medicines.

Bert Koenders, the special representative of the United Nations Secretary General in the Ivory Coast has been visiting Northern Ivory Coast.
