As Nigeria goes into the second week of a military offensive against radical Islamist movement Boko Haram, statements from the military have highlighted a series of gains, particularly in north-eastern Borno state. Military operations appear to be focusing on Borno’s capital Maiduguri, a city of over 1.2 million people, where the population faces a curfew and road blocks as an urban counter-insurgency operation moves into gear.
